In reality, these must be done hand in hand. Humanitarian efforts do an incredible job, serving the poor and looking after the needy. Yet, if it is not coupled with the gospel, we miss out on our biggest need: our need for God. But if we bring the gospel only, without care for the materially needy, “… how can the love of God be in that person?”

God wants both transformed hearts, as well as transformed circumstances.

The incredible thing about what’s going on over here is that circumstantial transformation is coming through the local churches. The micro-businesses that aim to build wealth are owned and operated by pastors. The efforts to reduce material poverty are immersed in the gospel. If you took God out of the picture, no amount of money in the world could genuinely redeem.

We’ve had a great time the last two days at this second conference. Jeremy has been preaching on servant leadership, peacemaking, and raising up the next generation. He was able to meet again with pastors’ wives and widows this afternoon, listening to and encouraging them. [insert video]

Eli has been ministering beautifully through song, most notably Trust in God and Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus. I’ve been teaching on the four broken relationships that contribute to poverty (God, self, others, creation).

Please continue to pray for the remainder of this week, as we meet with youth tomorrow and finish off the conference on Friday. Pray that God would speak through the three of us, as we continue to learn so much from our Kenyan brothers and sisters.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress…”
James 1:27

“For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the afflicted who have no one to help…”
Psalm 72:12

Samuel – It’s easy to separate efforts to reduce material poverty and efforts to grow the kingdom.
